Alvin Fielding and Amelia Smith Letters, Jul 1906 MSS 7952 [notes by transcriber are in brackets; preprinted text is in bold] [Ltr. 1, p. 1] #97 Farleigh Road Stoke Newington London My Own Dear Millie and Ruth — July 3rd 1906 I received Your welcome letter of June 18th – it came Yesterday morning and I was glad to get it and know that You are both well – You dont know what a comfort it is to Me to hear from especially when You are well I am sorry – Your Papa does not Improve faster I do hope he will not have any farther serious trouble with his hand but we cant expect the wound to heal as rapidly on a old person as it would on a Younger person for this reason You must see that Your Papa is very careful – for fear it gets worse – Sister Chipman left for home on June 22 – You ask who wilford is – its Elder Beesley his name is Wilford A Beesley – I guess he will reach home by tomorrow – July 4th he reach Boston on June 30th – and as he was ancious to get home I think he he will go straight throught – and be with his folks in time to celebrate the 4th with them and I expect You will see him shortly after - nearly all the Elders are in here to day we hold our [Ltr. 1, p. 2] Priesthood meeting at 11 oclock – and then tomorrow we will go out Picnicing we have not Yet decided – where we will go but will do so after meeting – so I guess I will be able to tell You in this letter where we decide to go – we went out to Hyde Park Yesterday and took a boat ride on the serpentine – and this morning I have got two blisters on My hand to pay for it -but I enjoyed the outing – it shows how tender My hands So Ruth wanted to write to Papa, goodness I would like to see her do some of the cute things You mention but I guess I must be satisfed with hearing You tell about them – and she knew when she was through – bless her little doll self So the Doctor hugged and kissed our little precious baby and said she was just like her Mamma – that is what I have always said and that is just what suits Me but say Dearie that Doctor – I think was killing two birds with one stone he wanted You to know how sweet You were also and that was a cute way of telling You If he wasn’t an old Married Man I might get jealous – becaus I think My wife and baby are the prettiest and sweetest folks in this big world – and You are all the world to Me- and I can tell You I have had hundreds of fine compliments – on My Dear Mamma and baby and I have all the reason in the world to be happy and I am mighty proud – of My wife and baby – You speak of meeting Mrs Brown and I presume You mean Mrs Frank Brow – Yes Dearie the swedish Elders usually get off with about two Year or two and a half Years but the boys [Ltr. 1, p. 3] 3 both seem to think that they will get off at two Years, Well Mamma it is now 1130 P.M. – so You will see I did not finish this letter without interruption I had to stop writing to attend Priesthood meeting and then I went down town with Elder Seare and Steams and we did some shopping at least they did and so did I for all I bought some More of those waist patterns for one of the boys – and say Mamma I saw some more of those beads – at 9¢ per row and it will cost $108 for as Many as I sent You and they had some larger than those of Yours at the same Price if You would rather have some large ones You can sell Yours to Miss Tuddenham and I will get You some of the others- some of the boys like the small ones the best but it is only a matter of choice, which would You rather have? - they had quiet a lot of both kinds – Well Dearie we have decided to spend the 4th at Bushy Park same place as we did last Year – and we are to leave here at 9 A.M. we have just returned from Street Meeting we walked out to Stamford Hill and back six Miles and and down town and almost back so we [Ltr. 1, p. 4] at least three of us have covered about twelve Miles this afternoon and Yesterday I walked even further – I feel like I can sleep to night – Elder Beckstrand was with us Yesterday and being a new Elder and not being used to walking we almost killed him off – I have gotten to be a pretty good walker – we had a fine meeting this evening until and old apostate by the name of stroker requested an officer to make us Move this Man Stroker is one of is one of old Jarmans helpers and a fellow I would like to meet along in some quiet spot and I would beat his block off – he is a miserable mean fellow – but we had a big crowd and they took our tracts and often the meeting I had a talk for about an hour with a fellow – so we felt well paid for our trouble – Well Mamma I will stop for this time and I will tell You what kind of a time we have tomorrow, when I write to You – again – and I will then answer Your letter, I began to answer it when I started to write but did’nt finish it – kiss our precious doll baby for Me and tell her to write Papa a letter also tell Ruth to kiss Mamma for Me- I do love You both with all My heart give My love to Your Papa and Mamma and Bertha and Joe and Heu & Nell and all and May the Lord bless You both and also all the folks is the wish and prayer of Your Loving and effectioante husband and Papa Alvin F Smith XXXXXXXXXX with lots of Love hugs and Kisses for You both from Papa [Ltr. 2, p. 1] #97 Farleigh Road Stoke Newington London July 5th 1906 My Own Dear Millie & Ruth Yesterday was the 4th of July and we did our celebrating – we left here about 930 – and it was nearly noon when we got out to Hampton Court there was only us Elders – no women folks this time- but 22 Yankees made quite an attraction for the people especially to see us all in a bunch – and they watched us play base ball we had a fine game no wrangiling this time theey say that there is usually a woman at the bottom of all trouble- and I think our trouble last Year with Groesbeck could be traced back to him and his love sick condition – but we had none of his kind with us Yesterday and the day went off fine we chose up sides and had a good game of ball, the side I was on beat the others – we were 19 runs to the others twelve – and this morning My legs dont walk so good – goodness but I am lame – but we had a lovely time - and I will soon be over the [Ltr. 2, p. 2] Soreness – Desie and Grace Grant got here Yesterday morning from Germany just before we were leaving but they were to tired to go with us and we were not sorry – becaus we had a better time by our selves, it was eight oclock when we got home- some of the boys – went to the opera in the evening but I come home and I was pleased to find a letter - from You this makes two this week and I will try and answer them both to day – Some of the boys want Me to go down town with them this afternoon and Elder Dear wants Me to go with him to do some shopping one day this weeks – He has gone out to Fred Luffs – and wanted Me to go with him but I thought I would write to You instead – Luff has not begun his missionary work Yet he is fine and kind to the Elders but he is – afraid – or ashamed to get out on the street with them – for fear some one will see him that knows him – I guess we all feel alike the first time but, I am not ashamed for people to Know who I am but it always frightens Me to go on the street until after we get started and then all fear leaves Me – it is certainly a great experiance and people dont know what it is like until [Ltr. 2, p. 3] 3 they try it – Well Mamma I will look over Your letters and answer them - Ruth must have a good time with the little chickens. She had some to play with when Sister Cusworth called to see You, just emagin her sing to that biddie and telling it to go to sleep – bless her – I am glad You get loved a little so long as it is from Ruth – that You get it. then You wont forget all about it, I would like to be where I could do like Ruth and say “Mamma Love” Young Will Brine must be very buisy otherwise he would have called to see You again but I guess he will call the first time he has a day off – he is still in Salt Lake working for the LDS Hospital – his Father had a nice long letter from him and he says he will soon have all the family out there – Yes I did have a good time at Beaford – Elder Seare and Stephens came in for the 4th and they want Me to go out and spend the first week in August with them – they are going on another pic – nic but I dont think I will go until later on, I am going to try and go berrying this fall – I would like to see Heus garden it must look [Ltr. 2, p. 4] nice – I see You are having changeable weather – that is what we always have but it has been fine the last few days – I am sorry that beastly cow gets no better hurry and get rid of her – but I think You had better keep the calf – and she will be a cow maby when I get home - and then I can do the job of looking after her – and relieve You – Say but hay is expensive – this aught to be a good season for hay, at the price You mention it dont pay to keep a cow or anything else that eats hay, I see by Your letter 88 – that You received a letter and post card from Me – but You didnt say whether Ruth got the post card I sent her – Say Dearie You can rest assured that I will be glad to get home by this time next Year unless I have You over here I do want You to see this country – before I come home if we can arrange and I think we can I am going to do it some how – but never the less I am sick of the trouble I have had with Sister E affairs but I have quit worrying about them I got weighed the other day – I am feeling fine and I am well but – I am not as fat as when I left home – but I hope to be by the time I get back – I am sorry Ruth dont eat better and more – and You also I fear as You say You have had so much to do that You have just nearly killed Your self – and I will be glad to hear that You are rid of the cow – I do hope either of You won’t get sick – I want You to always tell Me just how You are I can just emagin how Your Papas hand would effect You when you had to dress and I am glad – it is Improving – it was [Ltr. 2, p. 5] 5 also a big job for You to have to go with him to the Doctors every day – but I can emagin also how he felt about it – and it is only natural for him to want some body to go with him Say Dearie that is awful sad about – Alice Richards – she was a lovely girl and they must all feel terrible about it – and especially must Dr R – more so if he did the operating – and to think she was to be married – how does, Fairbanks feel – He is a nice fellow – he spent several weeks with us here in London last summer – but he, I understand is not very strong in the Gospel he lived in gay Paris to long - besides I have not much confidence in those Paris Artists – especially Young fellows who sit and paint from living models who stand start nacked – before them hour after hour – You can emagin what this would be like – especially when the artist handles them and fixes them in the position they want them in – well I dont believe any Young fellow can retain, a testimony of the Gospel, and the spirit of the Gospel and do these things, becaus I dont believe – they can keep pure – and see these things – and it is no wonder to Me that so Many – go wrong – when they [Ltr. 2, p. 6] have these things in front of them – I dont believe the Young fellow lives that can keep him self pure and see women in this condition day after day – an Elder was telling us, who has lovered in France that there are ten thousand Students of Art at the present time living with girls in Paris – and they are not married and when they get tired of one they get another, this is – the report they give us of these Young fellows – who study Art in Paris and judging from My own nature – I dont believe Young fellows can handle nacked women with out doing more than just handle them I dont say that Fairbanks ever did any thing – but I am not surprised at him loosing the spirit of the Gospel and if this is true and the full truth was known I guess – he lost his virtue also - So Ruth is a proud little doll and likes to be dressed up – good for her – that is a good trait. – I see You have found out who meant by “Wilford” I dont suppose the Tauts will call on You – they promissed they would, but they may forget all about it – Yes I was surprised when I read of Brown – forging checks – He must have gone crazy - so the Derrick girls are Married I fear - Ellas cousin wont get a much better fellow than Orrin Grow, So You have been up to Berthas again to dinner - and it was Joes Birthday - wish him Many happy returns of the day for Me - Is Richard as thick with the Reeds as he used to be. You know Dearie - I have no use for apostates I have seem and heard enough of them since I have been over here- they are like snakes to to Me and I dont care to handle them [Ltr. 2, p. 7] [page is only a half-page] 7 and I should think Richard would leave old Man Reed alone - he has no use for our people and I dont believe in having anything to do with such as him- Well Mamma I have just discovered that I forgot to send You that newspaper clipping - which I mention- ed sending two or three letters ago so I will put it in this one - I am well and happy and hope that My Mamma and Baby are also well - give My love to Your Papa and Mamma and Joe, Bertha Heu, Nell. Al and Alice and Mrs [Ltr. 2, p. 8] [page is only a half-page] Adams - in fact remember Me to the whole push - and May the Lord bless My Precious Wife and Baby and protect them from all harm and danger - tell Ruth to Kiss Mamma for Me and You can love our baby for her Papa - with lots of love hugs and kisses for You both I am as ever Your effectionate husband and Papa Alvin F Smith XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXX [Ltr. 3, p. 1] #97 Farleigh Road Stoke Newington London N My Own Dear Millie and Ruth July 10th 1906 I received Your letter #89 this morning, and I was pleased to learn that You are both well - I also received a post card from Wilford and also a letter the first written from Boston and the other before they landed - He will no doubt tell You what kind of a trip he had - He preached on the Street in Boston to about 300 people and he told Me how he enjoyed it - He is a fine speaker and knows how to explain the gospel and enjoys doing it He is one of the best boys that ever lived He didnt leave Boston until the 2nd so he would not be home by the 4th but I presume You have seen him by this time; Now far Your letter? Yes Dearie the London papers were commenting on the customs and costumes, of the Americans - and at present, about all they can think of is the, Beef Trusts, and canned meats and the cigarett's that come from America the papers are full of such things and all the, jokes - You hear at the theatres [Ltr. 3, p. 2] are take off on America's rotten meat we hear so much about it that the joke has gotten to be more stale and rotten than any meat ever put in cans by any American packer - but when an English man gets anything like this to harp about, he never knows when to let up they make regular asses of them selves but in nearly every thing they try to imitate the Yankees - and dour in the short waist business they can hold their own with the American girls - Yes I like to see pretty neck and arms My self - but the way people advertise what they are by going about half nacked - disgusts Me in fact I have seen so many vulger women since I came here- that I prefer to see - a neatly dressed lady with all her parts covered - if You could just see the way people go to the theatres in this town it would disgust You they try to see who can wear the least clothes and it is such a common thing to see all a woman has - that is is nice to see a "Lady" who thinks enough of her self and body to keep it covered - this is a wicked city - and Married people they say are just as bad as the unmarried and some I believe are worse - when old Men get sick of their wives - on account of them also getting old they hunt up some swell Young woman and spend their evenings with them at the Theatres and club houses while the wives remain home Some day I hope to show You these sights [Ltr. 3, p. 3] 3 that You can see what the world is coming to - I dont believe a person that is, Men "can look at women as they go about in the world to day with out having evil thoughts - and hundreds of thousand women parade the streets of this city night and day - who make merchandise, of their bodies - and it makes no diference who the person is if he has the price he can go home with them and I have heard it stated that the price's range from six pence to ten shillings - and it isnt safe for a decent woman to stand any length of time on the streets - becaus she may be accosted by some man and on the other hand it is the same with the Men - it is a wonder the Lord does'nt send a tidal wave or earth quake in the direction of London - the same as he did in San Francisco - the women here are just like they are in other parts - they all try to out do the other and then get out on the street - to have people admire them and in the west end of London - You can see some of the most attractive and beautiful women in the world and they are worldly too - in fact they parade the streets in regular opera fowns - and it is a sight to be long remem- [Ltr. 3, p. 4] -bered - and I think I won't forget in a hurry in fact I never saw more beautiful dressed or "undressed - as some would call it" - people in the world they say Paris beats it and if they do they are going some - but never the less I perfer seeing them - neatly covered - with out their busoms showing - I guess You will get tirid of this kind of reading but the world is very much alike in all the cities, among society - the society world is - corrupt - and Imorral - and it begins by people showing their persons which is only a license or invitation for people to admire them - and one thing leads to another - and then they loose something they can not regain and that is "virtue" I hope you won't think Me a crank but - I dont want any temptations placed in My way and I dont care to associate with girls who dress this way. for fear I might have evil thought in this direction - becaus one cant associate with them with out - Say Dearie I see by Your letter you say that - the fellow I rented the Forest Dale lot to- two Years ago used the lot again last Year - He is a miserable scoundrel - and I dont know but what I will tell him so the next time I happen to meet him - if ever I have this privilege - it is a good job I wasnt home - because I may have done something rash - I hope if he tries [Ltr. 3, p. 5] 5 it again this Summer - Heu will call him down - So somebody has sent Me a copy of the smoat Investigation - it Must have been sent by Bro Smoat - I am not acquainted with the Fisher You mention at least I dont remember one of what Name I do know Irvin, Tom, and Perry - but none by the name of Ernest - wasn't it Irvin instead of Ernest? what would he like to have jollied Me about, I guess I could have stood his jollying - I can stand almost any thing - now - days So South Temple looks nice since it has been paved - I would like to stroll up that way and drop in on you - what would You do it I did so with out telling You? I can just about guess - I had one experiance and next time I think I will let You know in advance so You will know I am coming, Yes it was sad about Alice Richards and I feel sorry for all of them and poor Fairbanks too - well he had better have her sealed to him self - I am glad You enjoyed the show - I guess old Not goodwin is just as clever as ever. So Ruth enjoyed the Merry go round - bless her I would like to have been with You, I am sorry You have so much trouble with that old cow - I wish I was where I could do [Ltr. 3, p. 6] the work for You - and how I would like a good bowl of bread and milk the fact of the matter is I am sick of the - chuck we live on and I eat one meal or lunch a day some days and when I get good and hungry I go down town and have something to eat - get Wilford to tell You how we live - I tell You we have the finest grub in the world the worst feature is, that it is rich for My blood - I hope You wont feel offended at the Cusworths for conveying the news to Elder Cummings that Ruth had a cold - I guess they thought I knew about it. but I would rather hear these things from You - I was surprised to hear that Mamma was going to Denver and probably Chicago - I have not heard from any of them for nearly a Month and a half - so I depend upon You for all the News I receive - Well Mamma kiss our doll baby for Me and tell Ruth to kiss her Mamma for Papa - give My love to Your Papa and Mamma and all the folks - and May the Lord bless You and protect You from all harm sickness and every thing of an evil nature I love My own dear wife and baby with all My soul - wish I could see You, but just wait ten more Months - lots and lots of love hugs and kisses for You both from Your loving and effectionate husband and Papa XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Alvin F Smith XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX [Ltr. 4, p. 1] #97 Farleigh Road Stoke Newington London My Own Dear Millie and Ruth July 14th 06 I have no letter from You to answer, and to day is mail day - I was out to Sister Crofts last night and attended cottage meeting in the evening at Bush Hill Park - Elder Seare was with Me we had a fine time, we spent a portion of Yesterday down town looking through some of the big apartment stairs, and I bought a little present for You which I will try and send You this Month - we had Elder Alfred Nelson - who used to live in Salt Lake and a Brother and Sister Peterson from Ogden - call here to see Me Yesterday they are from sweeden and both of them are well acquainted with George I used to Know Nelson at home, I had a nice visit with them. Mrs Peterson is a Sister to David Langloise - the boy that married Edith Ellerley - the girl that went from this country with Hyrum, They say George is a regular Swede - and they compli- mented Me on having more hair than George - and if this is the case I pity [Ltr. 4, p. 2] him - becaus I have no more than the law allows - but they say George has quite a smooth spot on the back of his head - so when You see Lillian You can console her by telling her that her old Man also is liable to come home wearing a wig - Well Millie Dear I have not heard from the folks Yet I cant emagin why they cant find time to write to Me, did Mamma go on that trip You spoke of? I went to the theatre twice last week and once this week we took in a variety show the other afternoon and had a good laugh at the nonesense - and Monday we went to see the play - called "his House in Order" at the St James Theatre it is the best show I have seen of the kind since I have been in London and if it ever comes to Salt Lake try and see it becaus it was just fine and last week we saw - the Dairy Maids a very pretty play - and now I have got to be good and not go any more for a Month or two - the three shows cost about 4 shillings including car far so You see - it was not very expensive - and last Wednesday I went down to Brighton with Sister Grant and the Gires we had a lovely time and we went in swimming in the sea it was just fine - I did enjoy the trip [Ltr. 4, p. 3] 3 so much we went by train - there was a Malar Bus Disaster in rout to Brighton last Friday - 9 people killed - we thought some of going by Bus - but changed our minds, I will send You the paper telling about it - Say Dearie You aught to see the way women go in Bathing at Brighton - You have seen pictures of French Bathing suits, well that is what most of them wear - they might just as will just have a Britch cloth of course some of them use skirts with the suit but most of them are just a thing tight fitting costume with very low neck and no legs in them - it is a sight to see them I am going visiting with Sister Gant this morning - way out in South London, she is almost ready so I will have to hurry if I finish this letter they are having a lovely time - seeing the sights and going to Theatres & Etc Say Dearie I have just received a letter from the Lawyer telling Me to call that he has finally received a cable giving the information wanted so I presume My time will be taken up now with Sister E. affairs and I will be glad when it all settled which I hope will be in the near future [Ltr. 4, p. 4] There is going to be a Conference of all the Elders of the British mission held in Leeds on July 22 and 23 - we are all expected to attend but I am not going - Chase wrote and asked Me If I was going and I have got to write and tell him no' Jones has not yet returned from Sweden - but we expect him most any day now quite a few of the boys from this conference expect to go to the Conference - and Prest Jones will will also go - he has'nt done much else but have a good time since he was appointed to preside and the work is not moving as it should - and I will be glad when there is a change made - that is as far as I am concerned but with the Everard trouble it looks as though I am doomed for some time Yet - Well Mamma give My love to Your Papa and Mamma and all the folks - kiss our precious baby for Me and tell Ruth to love her Mamma for Papa - I do love My Precious Wife and baby and May the Lord bless You both with every good blessing - is the wish and prayer of Your loving and effectionate husband and Papa Alvin P.S. Lotts and lots of loves hugs and kisses for My Millie and Ruth - XXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX [Ltr. 5, p. 1] #97 Farleigh Road Stoke Newington London July 17-06 My Own Dear Millie and Ruth I received a letter from Mamma Yesterday, written from Denver I also received one from each of You - and a post card from willard - all of which I was pleased indeed to get - the Money You sent also came and I went down town and spent it and will send You the things I bought by - Elders Nelson - and I told him that he could deliver them to You and stop and take dinner with You - I am sending Ruth a dress pattern for her Birth day - I didnt know how much it would take but I guessed at it and I think there will be plenty - this is the Month of Sales in this country and Elder Seare and My self have spent several days down town looking at the pretty windows - and admiring the beautiful costumes - and the swell people- I do wish You could see these sights and go through some of the beautiful stores of this city and I intend that You shall before I come home - well Dearie I [Ltr. 5, p. 2] I got You some silk gloves and Mitts and - there are more Lisle gloves warm than silk - in this town and they are almost as expensive - and Mitts are very fashionable here so I sent You what is supposed to be an extra good pair of each and then some cheap ones So if You dont want them all You can no doubt give them away - but if You would like some more of either kind write and tell Me. - what cotton gloves are very cheap also and the first time I go down town again I will get You a pair. on My way home last evening I went to the London glove Co - a purpose to get a pair and they were closed - I will also get You a pair of long or elbow length black kid - there are so many nice things - that a person dont know what to get - and when You will Know - what to get- You know Dearie I intend to have [Ltr. 5, p. 3] 3 You come over before I go home I am sending You a - some becaus - they are very fashionable over here and surely every swell wears them - I am also sending You another present but I wont tell You what it is I hope You will like it I wont have time to send You the kid gloves this time becaus Elder Nelson is going this Morning - and as I said the London glove Co was closed and they have the best ones so I want to get them there, I will also include the scarf - that I mentioned in My other letter - Now Mamma I want You to Send Me some samples of what You would like to train Ruths dress with and I will get them for You - I hope You will like the stuff I am sending for her dress. it will wash - and they guaranteed it will look just as good after and it had been and this is one reason why I got it & besides I thought it would be pretty - I came very near buying You a dress pattern only there was only 6 3/4 Yards - and this wasnt enough - I wish I had You [Ltr. 5, p. 4] here to go shopping with Me I do enjoy shopping but I would like it better if I could buy more pretty things as I see them - but I have to be contented with seeing them - Say Dearie I am buying gloves in size six but this seems so small I think this is the size You told Me I know You have a dainty little hand but so few people weare as small as this I am afraid I have made a Mistake - I tried to get a pair of long white Lisle gloves, but 6 1/2 was the only size they had do You think they would be to big for You if not I will get a pair they cost two shillings - and look fine on people and - an awful lot of them are [Ltr. 5, p. 5] -5- warm - by the fancy people Say Dearie Maby You would rather have a pair of long white kid instead of black - they are both fashionable and can be had from two and six up to eight shillings but You can get every good ones for five shillings and six pence - for those that come just to the elbow and for six and eleven You can get the extra long ones - You never saw so Many gloves in Your life as they have in the shop windows every body wears gloves of some sort - and there is an awful lot of silk mits, gloves, and Lisle gloves worn I would like You to tell Me which You would rather have white or black kid and also what length whether just elbow length or longer and I will wait until I hear from You Maby You would like both - Well Dearie I better answer Your letter - tell Ruth Papa got her letter and was mighty pleased with it - bless her little doll, self - how cute of her to insist upon writing to Papa - She [Ltr. 5, p. 6] is a perfect little 'Jewel' I see You say You didnt get Your letter from Me the day You wrote but I guess You must have received it the next day becaus I have not missed writing we have had some good days - mixed in with some staring ones - it is about like You are having at home - So You saw David and he had all his kids with him - he is a pretty good nurse - he sent, Me and roll of papers Yester- day - I have not had time read them Yet - the Grants left London Yesterday - and Sister Grant and the girls all - asked Me to send You their "Love" they want Me to go to Liverpool and spend a Month with them - and see if I can fallin up - Yes Dearie Your letters are plain and I have no trouble in reading them [Ltr. 5, p. 7] 7 the only fault I might find with them is, they are not long enough - and I dont suppose I would think they were long enough - even if You would write a dozen or two pages - You ask how My garments are holding out - I have plenty to last Me the old ones are almost done for - I have darned them several times but they are beginning to look like that pair You used to have - but I still have two pair that I have never had on and I am not wearing My Unions now I have finally left them off - those unions are not as good as they should have been considering the price we paid for them - they are wearing out faster than the garments - and they would fit a Man three times as big as Me - how the waist down but the chest part is none to big except the sleeves and they are about 4 inches to long - from that to six inches - No I didnt go to Sweden Jones got back and he said he had a find time - George was looking well - and was happy - Willard says [Ltr. 5, p. 8] he is coming home in two Years and I told him you might come over and go home with Me and he seemed tickled to death and says he does hope You will - yes the time is going rapidly and I am not sorry we are going to have a - warm time the latter part of the Month - President Grant is coming down to straighten us out - it is awful - and we need it- but You must not say anything about it and I will tell You what happens after it is all over - I am glad Bro Wright called to see You but sorry You were not home I hope You will see him when he calls again - So You went up to Owens on the aniversary of their wedding day I presume You mean Rulon Owens - - how [Ltr. 5, p. 9] 9 are they doing - and how is their “family” I am glad Your Papa is Improving - but he does not ment very fast but he must be careful of him self and have patience - I am so glad You are all well and I would like to hear our little chatterbox say some of the cute things she says and how interes- ting she must be, I bet she is a comfort to You and You are both a comfort to Me - I do love You both with all My heart - and how I would like to see You both - does Ruth get any better in her eating I am glad she likes milk and I hope she is able to eat more than she used to - and how are You are You any better than You were are You getting rested and are You any fatter - You know Dearie I have been worrying about You and the work You have had to do - and I fear that You are liable to Make Your self sick - and I know You would never stop and rest as long as You had [Ltr. 5, p. 10] any thing to do - I am pretty well the boys here all have a disease - except Elder Cummings and My self and some times I fear we will have it - they have named it the Missionary itch - it is an awful thing and is catching - Elder Seare Stephens, Saville, Hoopes, Ottley, Wilson, and several others have it and it almost drives them crazy - I take a bath every day and am living in hopes of escaping it - well Millie Dear give My love to Your Papa and Mamma and all the folks and kiss our doll baby for Me and tell Ruth to kiss her Mamma for Papa - I do love You both with all My heart and May the Lord bless You both - at all times is the wish and Prayer of Your loving and effectionate husband and Papa XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Alvin XXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX [Ltr. 6, p. 1] #97 Farleigh Road Stoke Newington London July 17th 06 7 P. M. My Own Dear Millie I finished writing to You this morning but I had no envel- opes - and I have just been out and bought some and after weighing My letter I find I have room for one More page and I hate to send a letter out light weight - and a post card makes it to heavy so I thought I would just - fill up this page and send it along - Frea Luff has been here all after noon and we have had a fine visit - he has invited Me to come down and stay two or three days with him - and he has extended an Invitation to You to come over and spend a Month with them He said, to Me You know Alvin I knew Millie long before You and She is one of the finest girls I ever knew - and he said it is not becaus I am talking to You - that I say so but from My acquaintance with her - He said she is a beautiful girl [Ltr. 6, p. 2] a neat dresser - a good house keeper and a fine cook - Just think of all these nice things he has been saying - He has also been - or we have been talking about some of Your old - sweet hearts and he said Millie aught to thank her lucky stars she did not Marry - — — — — I wont tell You all the ones he Mentioned but I told him that I thanked My lucky # stars that You did’nt - I am the one I think that is to be thankful and I am - I showed him Your and Ruths Photos and he exclaimed how much she is like her Mother and he spoke of her pretty dress and said that of course is just like Millie - she always was a swell dresser and likes to have her baby dressed the same - Elder Nelson came and got the parcel - well Mamma Dear I have filled this sheet and it is all I can send so by by sweet hearts - love hugs & Kisses for You both from Your Loving husband & Papa Alvin [Ltr. 7, p. 1] #97 Farleigh Road Stoke Newington London July 25th 1906 My Own Dear Millie and Ruth I arrived “Home” from Bradford Yesterday afternoon and we held our priesthood meeting here in the evening owing to the fact that so many of the Elders were in London - Well Dearie when I got home there was awaiting Me two letters from You, one from Hyrum two from the Lawyer one from Brother Tucker one from Wilford - which was written before he had seen You, a post card from Elder Geo Webb, a letter from George Smith and one from Miss Maud Stevens one of our Saints - I believe this includes them all - I read Yours first as usual and I was delighted to hear that You are both well, I will answer them after I have briefly told You of our trip we left London at 10 AM Saturday - Via the Great Central Ry. we landed in Bradford at 320 P.M. were met at the Depot by the Elders of the Leeds conference and were taken to our - Hotel, there were about 250 Elders in attendance at the conference including - some 30 who arrived [Ltr. 7, p. 2] on Saturday from home Miss Clark and Spurce Clawson and the Grant girls were there we held three fine meetings on Sunday - Bradford has a fine branch and some fine people I met quite a noumber of people who knew Hyrum and Richard and they were pleased to see Me - and they treated Me fine and they almost cried when they would talk to Me - I took several Meals with Dr Higgins and family they are members of the church - and well to do people 14 of them in family - and eight are members of the Church they are fine people and treated Me fine - and I met a Brother and Sister by the name of Deece - who were acquainted with Hyrum and they cried with joy to see Me and they think I resemble him very much well Dearie I had a lovely time and our meetings were fine and we had the Spirit of the Lord in our midst, Chase was there - and he hunted all day for Me while I was hunting him we finally located one another in the evening and I was pleased to see him he is well and happy - I left him Yesterday - He says he will not try to some down to London now until next Year after he gets his release - I saw nearly all the boys that came over with Me and we had a jolly time - My hand is actually sore from shaking hand so much and I saw lots of boys I knew before [Ltr. 7, p. 3] 3 I left home - I saw a Young fellow sitting in front of Me and I could only see the back of his head I knew or thought I knew him and I got close enough to pat him on the back and when he turned around it was surely who I had thought and none other but Len Miller Crum - Millies brother I was pleased to see him and he was pleased to see Me we had a nice visit together he said he saw Jennie Sullivan just before he left home and she had given him My address but he didnot expect to run across Me so soon - he looks just like Crum and I knew him from the back of his head - and I hadn’t he slightest Idea he was coming on a mission - I saw such a lot of fellows I was acquainted with and I feel well paid for my trip - I also saw Bro McMurrins Son who labors in Bradford - Iwill send You an addition of the star giving the names of those who attended the conference - and a report in general of our meetings George was sorry I didnot go over there to their Conference. Alex Nibley came [Ltr. 7, p. 4] over and spend a day with us and went with us to Bradford and he has gone on to Liverpool expects to be back in London about Saturday or Sunday he wants Me to go back with him and spend - a Month and fatten up. his Mother and father are expected here about the 5th of August and he wants Me to Meet them with him he has been quite poorly of late - in fact he is at present under the Dr care - and he is improving he sends his love to You I told him You wished to be remembered to him John Taylor was also with him and we had a fine time John is coming back to London Monday and he wants Me to Meet him - and how him arround London - I promissed him I would - the Grants invited Me again to come and spend a few days or weeks with them at Liverpool but I cant tell Yet if I will go - George didnt get down to the Conference he tells Me he would have had to cut his trip so short had he come that He decided not to go to the expense - Now for Your letters I will take #91 first of July 10th and if I dont manage to answer them both I will complete them next time - Elder Webb compliments Me on My wife and baby and thinks I have good reason to be proud of them He thinks I was Justified in bragging on them - and Wilford says that Salt Lake dont seem lik home, it is just like any other city and if it was not far [Ltr. 7, p. 5] 5 his family and sweetheart he would not care to remain - Wilford - is a fine boy and has the spirit of the Gospel and he thinks people are given too much to pleasure and not enough thought to religion - he feels that his friends have change, or at least he has no desire to associate with them becaus their ways are not such that he would feel satisfied to continue with them, I guess the change is with both Wilford and his friends - while He is more spiritual Minded - than when he left home they are less so - seeking more the pleasures of the day - and as he tells Me He does hope he will be able to retain some of the spirit of his mission, I guess the conditions of our people are very noticable to us when we return home - and like the people of the world, we ourselves in many cases are indiferent to the Gospel we have embraced “Say Dearie I have got to hunt a flea” well it got away I rolled up My garments on My leg and off he went three of tried to watch him but he was out - the little pests paralize Me when they get on Me - I dont know where I got it but they usually find Me [Ltr. 7, p. 6] Wilford is tickled to death to again be with his sweetheart - He says she is sweeter than ever and He says we often take a nice stroll by ourselves and You can guess the rest, Yes, I can guess the rest - from My experiance, I know the rest, and how I would like to have the same experiance he is having - and again be with You - Dearie those were happy times - but not nearly so happy as after we were married - I did think before we were united by the everlasting covenant of marriage that it would be impossible for Me to love You more than I did but My love for You increases day by day and I feel that You are a part of My every being and so You are, - and we have been blessed with our precious Ruth one of the greatest gifts we could have and this precious jewel helps to increase our love for one another - when we were two we were happy but now that we are three, how much more happy we are - I do thank the Lord for My precious wife and baby - who are dearer to me than My own life - and to have a knowledge of the Gospel as it was - anciently and as it has been restored in this day by Jesus Christ through his ministering angels to the Prophet Joseph Smith which teaches us that we are one anothers not only for this life but for the life to come and what could bring more happiness than this knowledge - what happiness would there be for Me if - as the world tells us that at death we should be parted for ever- to believe such a thing would bring [Ltr. 7, p. 7] 7- misery to My soul - but thanks be to the Lord for his goodness towards us - thanks be to him for the Gospel of his son Jesus Christ - which tells us- and teaches us of the things pertaining to life hereafter and O, the joy this brings to My heart - even the knowledge I have that through obedience to the Gospel - we are promissed the greatest gift of God - which is “eternal life” with our loved ones - well Dearie You will think I have entirely forgotten Your letter - and if I dont start answering it I would get it done in this writing -Yes they say George is a long winded preacher - but he always - gifted - with gab. I am a very short winded preacher - in fact I prefer short speeches - not alone becaus I am not able to Make long ones but becaus I believe that people get tired - and I think it better to under feed them rather than over do it - leave them with a desire for More - You know there is such a thing as getting too much of a good thing - I am glad You go to the theatre now and again - Yes Miss Clark is engaged again but as I told You in a previous letter, I fear she will never Mary Andelin - she is a girl that must have a sweet heart and some one to love her - it is contrary [Ltr. 7, p. 8] to Mission rules for Elders to do this for her and Andelin being the only one on hand she has led him on and being only a kid not My style in fact I have only seen one girl that was and - when I first Met that one I had a case on at first sight - and thanks be to Heu - for leading Me Your way Poor Spence Clawson came over her with Miss Clark and, Jones made the remark that he bet, Andelin wished he was here and Spence said - and so do I.” - then he related how he had been out sight seeing with her all day the day before and to the opera in the evening and how he made excuses to her in one way and another in order to get rid of her long enough to Make water and how she hung on to him like leach until he had to almost come out and ask her if she would excuse him long enough to piss,” Spence is a big fat fellow and he said it almost killed him - and she did not have [---] sense enough to take the hint - it would disgust You to hear some of the storys they tell on Miss Clark and Andelin - some friends of Miss Clark went to bed - they asked for Arvella and He said she is up to My room - when she takes a bath Andelin bathes in the same watter, Tom Giles called to see Willard Andelin and had a lady friend with him and while there Andelin said - to them Arvella stopped here last night - poor Tom wondered at first if they slept together and he said finally after he and the lady had been almost embarrassed to death he explained that they had changed rooms and that he had slept in her room - Alex Nibley can tell more of these kind of stays than you can shake a stich at and nearly every lady is disgusted with their actions - well Mamma I guess it is up to Me to answer Your letters next time I have filled up all the pages I can send at one writing - I am well and happy give My love to Your Papa and Mamma and all the folks kiss Ruth for Me and tell her to love Mamma for Papa - May the Lord bless You both and all, is the wish and prayer of Your loving and effectioante husband and Papa - with lots and lots of love hugs and kisses for You both - effectionately - Yours Alvin XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX [Ltr. 8, p. 1] #97 Farleigh Road Stoke Newington London N. Eng. My Own Dear Millie and Ruth July 28th 1906 Here it is Saturday again yesterday I spent all day looking after the Everard Estate I got home at 530 and got all ready to write to You when Alex Nibley - John Taylor and President Ballif - arrived from Liverpool they insisted upon Me going with them to the show, at the Hippodrome so we went it was just fine - and after we got home we went down stairs and made us something to drink - it was one oclock when we got in bed. July 31 - 1906 My Own Dear Millie and Ruth I received Your letter 93 of July 16 with programme of the Taut Concert, I am glad You enjoyed it but I understand the people are disapointed - with Nannie becaus of her unwillingness to sing more than once or twice at the concerts I guess they forgot that they promissed to call and see You, So Bro Goddard Met You and wished You to stretch Your emagination and think He was Me, You gave him a good answer, it was very kind of him to pay for You and I will write him a card one of these days and thank him for his kindness, I understand that all the Tauts are ready to come back to England, Prest Jones got a letter from Wilford and He said they were - Well Mamma Alex, John and Bro Ballif went back last night I have had a lovely time while they have been here - and would have gone back with Alex had it not been for - He expects to be over here again shortly in company with his folks who are at [Ltr. 9, p. 2] present on their way over and He saiys we will have a good time when he comes back - we had a good time telling each other of our love affairs. I told him all about Mine and he did like wise - He thinks I have a mighty sweet wife and baby and He sends his love to You both - we have had one or two good Meals while He has been here - but we didnt get them here at the house - I have made up My mind to have something from now on - if I have to go down town every day to get it I have kicked and kicked about the stuff we have here - but it dont do any good, Alex said say Alvin how do You live on such grub. I told him I had got like the old Mans horse - so that I could live without eating - I can do fine if I can have one good meal a day I didnt eat any breakfast this morning but on My way home from tracting I bought a couple of Nice lamb chops and I am going to eat them to day while the rest of the bunch eat the regular boiled potatoes - and peas cooked and served dry, I am going to try and shame them into having something to eat, and from Now on I am going to have something good if I have to get it for My self - Well Dearie I was going to tell You about some changes - You know Sid Savice got tired of being snubbed by the boss so he asked to be sent out into the full and Elder Seare has been [Ltr. 9, p. 3] 3 brought into the office - he is not very much stuck on the Job but is willing to do his best, being called to do so- Well Mamma I had a fairly good dinner, the rest of them envied Me but they didnt say much about it, Sid jollied Me and said why didn't You get enough for all of us, I told them I didnt want them to change there then regular diet through Me, becaus I said I thought You fellows would rather have - dry boiled potatoes and corn, becaus that was about all that have been prepared - the boss didnt say anything at first but he began to tell how the hous had run behind and I told him that it was not from what I had eaten, and I said we used to Keep even and live better than we do now, and finally they all shut up - I got enough meat for another meal and I am going to try the same thing again, Say Dearie I got a card from Harold G Reynolds the other day he said he had seen You and that he wished he had a wife just like You, I dont know but what I will have to come home, all these fellows falling in love with My sweet heart, You know I am such a jelous fellow, it is not only the single fellows [Ltr. 9, p. 4] that admire You but the married ones as well, but I dont see how they can help it, becaus I think I have the sweetest women in the world - So Will Bruce has not been to see You I saw his father and he has written him to call now and again and see You he is Still working at the Hospital - I will get some of those becaus for Eva the first time I go down town passed the shop - I think I can get them smaller but she will have a hard time threading them, Yes Dearie I forgot to enclose that clipping, but I put in a letter later on and I guess You finally got it- Yes I do like to tend babys and I saw a little tad to day that I would like to have stollen, by jove it was a sweet little doll it reminded Me of Ruth when she was a little baby - I would just like to have hugged it - when I was coming home to day - as I came up the high street a Man came out of one of the stores, to let down the awning the side walk was crowded - and just as I got from under it down it came with a crash and three Men were knocked down - and one little girl - received a blow on the head and was rendered unconcious and one or two others were stuck and nearly knocked down, I was hardly three Yards away when it occoured and I passed right by and almost touched the Man as he began to lower it - that was pretty lucky for Me dont You think so - You saw Hiley and his sweet heart did You - when are they going to be married -? I am glad Your Papas hand is healed but I hope he will not have much trouble in limbering up his [Ltr. 9, p. 5] 5 fingers, Say Dearie I am sending You a pair of white Lisle gloves to day they are done up in two or three News papers I hope You will get them and I hope You will like them, they are very pretty I think but it is risky business smuggling them through the Mail, let Me know how You like them if You get them, and tell Me whether they fit, I am glad You have found something that helps Your Mammas Rhumatism, she must have suffered terribly, poor Spence Clawson has been laid up in bed for a week here with the same trouble, I have had a few slight touches of it but nothing like I had that time at home when You used to help Me dress, and rub My Arm I know how to feel for those who have the diseas, Say Mamma I Got weighed the other day Alex and I went swimming and what do You think I weighed Just guess. when we got nacked I got on the scale and Just weighed 132-lbs how is that for a full grown fellow - I think that is pretty good dont You? - I am glad You had a nice time on the 4th wish I could been with You; to see our doll baby enjoy the fire works, we had a Sunday school outing at Alexander Palace on the 28th but [Ltr. 9, p. 6] but I did'nt go, I was with Alex all day they had some fine fire works - in the evening - so they say - and I guess they did becaus I have seen some fine display once or twice since I have been over here No I am not much of a walker but I can hold My own with these fellows over here, I believe I do sleep a little better than I did but as good Yet as I would like - I got a nice letter from Aunt Alice - she is the first of the family of women folks to write to Me and if You see her tell her I was pleased with her letter and that I will answer it out of these days - tell her I had a good time with Chase at the Conference in Bradford, the Higgins people I told You about muling in Bradford were in London Sunday and they come to Meeting to see Me, just think of that - they are nice folks and well to do people they have envited Me to come and see them when ever I am any where near Bradford, I had something bite Me on the rist and it turned into a ring worm and it kept getting worse and worse so I asked Dr Higgins Sunday what to do for it and he told Me to get equal parts Carbolic acid and Glycerine - and rub it and it would soon be well - I did so and it is almost better - .Say Dearie what do You think Sid just came in and told us that the Boss had ordered a roast of beef for dinner tomorrow - I guess it gave him an appetite to see Me cuting a nice mutton chop - Ha. Ha. I am going to write and tell Alex - becaus I know this will tickle him, Say Mamma it is funny Lillie the girl we have here just came up and said the boss had been down telling her what to prepare and what [Ltr. 9, p. 7] 7 Not to prepare - I guess I have fixed them this time, it is really amusing Say Mamma I have just received a card from Sister Higgins - they promissed Sunday to come up to the House they have written to tell Me it will be impossible to come on account of their short stay here in London but they want Me to come and stop a week or longer with them in Bradford when I am through with My Mission I just this minute got the card - and it was posted at Chelsey Smith West London, So Maby when You come over we will go down and see them - Well Mamma I am going down to the Tailars and I will fill up this page when I come back, Well Dearie just before I went to the Taylors the Boss coms to Me and we decided to hold a council meeting regarding the conditions So when I got home we held the meeting it lasted three hours nearly and we have all come to an understanding now and I guess we will get on better from Now on, at least I hope So I am going to do My part, and if I get through with this Estate affairs, before time for Me to come home I will ask again to be sent out into the field, I guess we have all been at fault, and from now on we are going to try and overcome our faults, I have Many My self, and the rest [Ltr. 9, p. 8] from them - Well Dearie - this is the last day of July, three more days and it will be Ruths birthday - I hope to be home to celebrate it one Year from now kiss her for Me and tell her Papa would like to give her a couple of big hugs for a present, She will be a big girl when Papa gets home - She wont know Me I am going to have My picture taken when Alex comes back and I will send You one and I will have to send Ruth another has she still got the other or has she worn it out, I wish You would surprise Me with one of Your self I would like to see My Young sweet heart bless her, bless You both Say Mamma I do love You both I tell You I am proud of My Wife and baby, I would just give all I have got to be with You a few minutes but what good would a few minutes be, well it would be a lot better than none Give My love to Your Papa and Mamma and all the folks, tell Heu it is about time he was answering My letter Remember Me to all friends, and to Bro Goddord - May the Lord bless You both is the wise and prayer of Your loving and effectionate husband and Papa - with lots and lots of loves hugs and Kisses for You both - Alvin XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
